The best time to visit Punta Cana

High season, hurricane season, seaweed and whales: how the year actually works on the east coast of the Dominican Republic, month by month.

Published

Punta Cana is warm all year. Daytime temperatures move by only a few degrees between January and August, and the sea is always pleasant for swimming. What changes through the year is the rain, the wind, the seaweed and the number of people who arrive with you.

December to April: high season

This is the driest and most predictable part of the year, with the lowest humidity and the calmest evenings. It is also when most visitors from North America and Europe come, particularly around Christmas and New Year, the US spring break in March, and Easter week, which is also a major holiday in the Dominican Republic.

In practice, high season means booking earlier. Villas, boats and the best restaurant tables go first, and two to four weeks ahead is the minimum for a specific date. For the holiday weeks, months ahead is not excessive.

May to November: the green season

The weather turns more humid and brief tropical showers become more frequent, usually in the afternoon and rarely for the whole day. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, with most activity between August and October.

Hurricane season does not mean a hurricane. Most weeks pass without any storm, and a direct hit on Punta Cana is rare. But it does mean a plan needs a second option. For anything on the water, it pays to plan a fallback date or a sheltered route, and travel insurance that covers weather disruption is worth having in these months.

Sargassum

Sargassum is a brown seaweed that drifts across the Atlantic and reaches Caribbean beaches in varying amounts. On the east coast of the Dominican Republic it tends to be heaviest between May and August, and lightest from December to February.

Two things are worth knowing. First, it affects beaches differently: east-facing stretches such as Bavaro and Cabeza de Toro receive more of it than the south coast around Bayahibe and La Romana. Second, it only affects the shoreline. A day on a boat goes to clear water regardless of what is on the beach that morning, which makes a private charter the most reliable way to swim in open sea during the summer months.

Whale watching in Samana

Every winter, humpback whales gather in Samana Bay, in the north east of the country, to breed and calve. The season runs from mid January to late March, with February usually the best month.

Samana is a long way from Punta Cana by road. By helicopter it becomes a day trip. Transfers for longer routes are described on the page on transport in Punta Cana.

Month by month

  • January to March: the driest, sunniest months, with daytime highs around 29°C (84°F). Peak season, and the humpback whales are in Samana Bay.
  • April: still dry and warm. Easter week is busy, the rest of the month quieter.
  • May and June: more humid, with the first tropical showers. Sargassum starts to arrive on the east-facing beaches.
  • July and August: the hottest months, with highs around 31°C (88°F), and the summer holidays. The peak of the blue marlin season.
  • September and October: the heart of hurricane season and the quietest months of the year. Showers are more frequent, but most days still have long spells of sun.
  • November: the rains ease and the weather improves through the month, before the crowds return.
  • December: high season begins, with dry weather and the Christmas and New Year holidays, the busiest weeks of the year.

So when should you come?

  • For the most reliable weather: January to March
  • For a quieter stay with more availability: late April, May, or November
  • For a celebration on the water: December to April, outside hurricane season
  • To see the whales: February
