ARRIVAL AND TRANSPORT

Punta Cana airport transfers and private transport

The first hour after landing sets the tone for everything that follows. Someone waiting with your name, a car that fits your luggage, and no queue at the taxi rank.

What arrival at PUJ actually looks like

Punta Cana International, PUJ, is not a conventional airport. The terminals are open sided with thatched roofs, and part of the walk from the aircraft to immigration happens outdoors. It is charming, and it is also where a long queue forms when three wide bodied aircraft land within the same half hour.

Since 2018 the tourist card has been included in the price of most airline tickets, so there is nothing to buy on arrival. What remains is immigration, baggage claim and customs. In a quiet period that takes twenty minutes. After a bank of afternoon arrivals from the United States and Europe it can take well over an hour.

A VIP meet and greet is arranged airside, which means someone joins you before immigration rather than after it, walks you through the process and stays with you to baggage claim. It is the single change that makes the largest difference to how a trip starts, particularly with children, or with a group arriving on different flights.

From PUJ, Cap Cana is about fifteen minutes by road. Bavaro is twenty to thirty. Uvero Alto is closer to an hour, and La Romana around the same. Those numbers matter when you are deciding what to plan for the evening you arrive.

What is arranged for you

  • VIP meet and greet before immigration, with assistance through the process
  • Private transfer from PUJ to your villa, hotel or resort
  • Vehicles matched to your group and your luggage, including SUVs and vans
  • Child seats, on request
  • Flight monitoring, so a delay does not leave you without a driver
  • Cars on call for the length of your stay
  • Helicopter transfers for longer routes, such as Casa de Campo or Samana
  • Return transfer timed against your check in, not against a guess

Getting the timing right

The most common mistake is booking dinner too close to the landing time. A flight that touches down at 6:00 pm will rarely have you at a table before 8:30 pm once immigration, baggage and the drive are counted. We plan the first evening around the real numbers rather than the optimistic ones.

For departures the calculation runs the other way. Airlines ask for three hours on international flights out of PUJ, and in high season that guidance is worth following. We set the pickup from your check in time and from the traffic expected that morning, not from a fixed rule.

If your group is arriving on separate flights, please inform us. Splitting arrivals is normal and easy to handle, but it is far easier to handle in advance than at the kerb.

Questions we are asked about arriving

Do I need to book a transfer before I arrive?
It is strongly advisable. Taxis wait outside the terminal, but rates are negotiated on the spot, larger groups often cannot fit into one vehicle, and after a late arrival a queue is not where you want a holiday to begin.
Is the VIP service before or after immigration?
Before, which is the point of it. Someone meets you as you come off the aircraft and stays with you through immigration and baggage claim.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Flights are monitored and the driver is moved with them. You do not need to call from the aircraft.
Do I need to rent a car in Punta Cana?
For most stays, no. Distances are short but local driving takes some getting used to, and a car with a driver on call is usually simpler and easier to change plans around.
Can you arrange child seats?
Yes, with notice. Tell us the ages and the right seats will be in the right vehicle.
How far is the airport from Cap Cana?
About fifteen minutes by road in normal conditions. Bavaro is twenty to thirty minutes, and Uvero Alto closer to an hour.
